I got hints of this flavor throughout the bowl and I must say, I like it! The only heavy latakia blend I like better is CAO old ironside. Compared to other Latakia-rich mixtures, I found Pirate Kake to be a flavorful yet monochromatic smoke. There's no finesse nor subtlety here. It doesn't do anything that would keep me coming back to it. I love how C & D presses the mixture into bite-sized chunks almost good enough to eat. Perhaps this is why pirates didn't have wives on their ships with them. Mild to medium nicotine content. Pirate Kake is fantastic: I could smoke this stuff every day, all day long. The orientals are drowned by the Latakia and the burley, apart from mitigating the burnt cork taste of pure Latakia, does little. The block has been sitting for awhile again, as the plastic appears to have yellowed. It will last a long time though, this is more of an occasional smoke. I have heard a lot about this lat bomb and I was ready to explode it in my den. Some would say the latakia is over dominant so much that you can not taste the other tobaccos in this blend. Blends like Proper English, Mountain Camp, etc. The turkish hides sheepishly in the shadows and the burley taste (if burley really has a taste) is MIA. Awash in Latakia! I smoke mostly Aromatics and got this as a free sample. The tobacco smokes evenly, and burns to a white ash afterwards. BUT almost no nicotine. The tobacco seems dry enough when being rubbed out but is hard to keep lit without drying. Highly recomendednot for the faint of tounge or heart. The scent from the open bag makes promises that are kept. Finally getting to share my review on Cornell and Deihl's Pirate Kake!!! C&D Pirate Kake was among them. After trying a few Latakia blends I thought I might be up to the task of trying this tobacco. Highly recommended to the lat bomb smokers. At which point, even I had to admit that this was as intense flavor-wise as anything I had ever smoked. The Burley is woody and dry, but are detectable in this smoke. This is taking condimental overload to the extreme. The flavor is largely latakia, but not one dimensional, as Old Ironsides is, for me. The nose on the smoke is so pleasing! It is also an understatement. I enjoy it with a strong black coffee. This does blast my palette out completely after smoking it, so it is resigned to evening smokes until I can strengthen my tongue. It's definitely loaded with latakia but it just doesn't overwhelm the blend. Once rubbed out and let to dry for about an hour there was no issues keeping the bowl lit. Since in bulk I broke it into three big pieces and put it in a mason jar. Smooth, super tasty. Since I've bought it, it did mellow out a little and is now quite a pleasant smoke, but I feel there are a lot of better thought out english/balkan blends to spend my time with. I don't think I will be buying another tin, but it was a good experience. The room note is sublime. There is just n o reason for it. Any pipe tobacco shipped to a New York State address will be subject to the applicable state imposed excise tax (75% over the wholesale price) and appropriate New York State sales tax. A couple weeks later when I could imagine wanting Latakia again, I put some nice Squadron Leader in the pipe and smoked it down 1/4 way, until the shank cracked 1/2 down from the bowl. The strength like the body falls short of medium. That is why this blend should not be compared with Dunhill EMP, or similar blends. and orientals. Details. It smokes well. Other than many expect, Latakia is a very low in nicotine and tongue friendly tobacco which is very strong in taste, though. A cigarette is to be smoked. A cold smoke, very enjoyable, especially (I imagine) in a cold winters day when you drink a smoky Islay Scotch. I think it's loaded with all sorts of nuances. I can definitely enjoy a full english here and there. Smokes cool and dry. When put up against any of these blends, even C&D's Star of the East, Pirate Kake just isn't as interesting. If you like Latakia, try this anyway as it is exceptionally wondeful example of the fact that a predominantly Latakia blend can be heavenly. I knew by the guy who I traded tins with ( He got an old tin from me of Kingfisher ) that it was a full bore Latakia blend, I have to say I am most pleased. The tobacco was allowed to stand for two whole days. The latakia that Craig uses does have it's own unique taste and room note for whatever reason. Glad I gave it a shot and a second try. Mind you, its a good mixture; smooth and heavily smoky. This is my first C&D blend to try. I smoke all kinds of English/Balkan stuff. I love it! Whenever I've had non-aromatics, I've felt like they've tasted like a combination of BBQ sauce and soap, and this wasn't much different. If you like latakia, you will love this blend. Weird but true, and thats exactly where this blend is. Did I say there was a lot of Latakia in this blend?? I love this tin note being so leathery woody and sour. I disagree strongly with those who say Latakia is strong, and there in lies the trouble here.
